Steven Nipin-Muskwa

Steven Nipin-Muskwa is a local organizer of a sport that's fairly new to our area: Disc Golf. He took a few minutes to speak about the history of the game, his success with it, as well as some of the local programming.

Q: Steven, thanks for the chat. Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

A: I've been a professional disc golfer for about 10 years now. I have an awesome life partner who also works towards community strength. We have two great sons, a 14 year old who works for the arena and hockey teams alike. We also have a crazy little guy that's 2. We enjoy anything outdoors and lots of volunteer work. And of course - disc golf!

Q: Disc Golf is a growing sport around the world. Can you explain how the sport works to our readers?

A: Disc golf is exactly like ball golf, the only big difference is you play with a modified frisbee. You tee off from a tee box and play from where you landed until you complete a hole into a basket. There are different discs for different shots just like regular golf. It's one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

Q: Last fall a course was put in locally, can you tell us a bit about it?

A: With tireless efforts from a local middle school teacher by the name of Sam Meggs, and local businesses that banded together, our beautiful course was created on the east side of Devon Park surrounding Kinsman field.

Q: You've had some personal success in the sport. Do you mind telling our readers about that?

A: I most recently took 3rd place in Manitoba Provincial Championships as a professional. Prior to this I've had many other top finishes including a few wins.

Q: You must be pretty excited to have a new activity in our communities. What are some of the activities planned?

A: As of right now we have 2 huge camps for kids to get involved with this summer. The goal is to have kids at the park and learning a new sport.

Q: Thanks so much for taking the time to speak. Did you have any final thoughts for readers?

A: Please support in anyway you can. I do run these courses, but we are always looking for community backers to help with costs so it's easily accessible to new players young and old alike. Oh, and if anyone wants to play, just shoot me an inbox. I'd be glad to play a round with you!
